After a rainy day at Longleat, watching red pandas and Asian small-clawed otters and buying all the different fudge flavours at the sweet shop, we stopped off at The George Inn for a much needed and highly anticipated Roast Dinner.

My partner ordered the rump of grass-fed beef served medium-rare (£25.90) which came with horseradish sauce, and I ordered the loin of high welfare pork (£23.50) which had sausage stuffing, crackling and baked apple sauce.  Both meals had roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, roasted carrots, carrot mash, red cabbage, crispy kale and red wine gravy.  We also ordered cauliflower cheese with a thyme crumb to share (because who doesn’t love cauliflower cheese?!) for an additional £6.

My partner and I were really impressed with the cooking of the vegetables.  The red cabbage was sticky without being runny and had a subtle aniseed after taste.  The roasted carrots were sweet and retained their bite, and the cauliflower cheese was hands down the best cauliflower cheese we’ve had in a long time.  The meal itself was a generous portion and came with a huge jug of gravy which we were grateful for, especially as the meals were a little on the pricey side.  We were really impressed with the service too, as the staff were attentive and gave me a pot of bread sauce even though I didn’t order the chicken.

My rating: 8/10.  One point deducted for the meat (well cooked but under seasoned) and one point deducted for the roast potatoes being a little hard in the middle and also being under seasoned.

My partner’s rating: 8/10.  One point deducted for the carrot mash texture and another point deducted for the roast potatoes (he also thought they could have been boiled before roasting, and needed a lot more herbs, salt and pepper!).

Our combined rating: 16/20.  A very reasonable rating in a beautiful Tudor inn, we would definitely recommend this pub to others (for the gorgeous décor alone, let alone the food!) and can’t wait to return!
