After a long wooded valley walk in Snuff Mills, along the River Frome and passed the weir and old mill, we stopped off at The Forge and Fern for a much needed and highly anticipated Roast Dinner.

My partner ordered Slow Roasted Pork Belly (£19.50) which came with crispy pork crackling and I ordered the Garlic and Thyme Roast Chicken (£19.50) which had sage and apricot stuffing.  Both meals had garlic and rosemary potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, celeriac puree, spiced red cabbage, maple glazed carrots, seasonal greens, and a red wine gravy.  We also ordered a truffled cauliflower cheese to share (because who doesn’t love cauliflower cheese?!) for an additional £5.95.

Both meats were super soft and succulent, the carrots had a lovely, sticky sweet glaze and melted in the mouth and the stuffing was possibly the most delicious stuffing I’ve ever tasted. The meal itself was a generous portion so good value for money and the service was extremely attentive.  The atmosphere in the outdoor covered garden was a nice balance between calm and lively but after a cold walk, we wished we could have sat inside.

My rating: 7/10. One point deducted for the stuffing (delicious but very small portion), one point deducted for the roast potatoes being a little hard in the middle, and one point deducted for the gravy not being served in a little jug so the customer can choose how much to pour themselves.

My partner’s rating: 8/10. One point deducted for slightly soggy cabbage and one point deducted because the texture of the celeriac was not to his liking.

Our combined rating: 15/20. A very reasonable rating, would recommend to others and we will definitely come back!
